Lot Essay
This intimate study relates to a pastel executed by Millet in around 1874 titled Bergère dormant à l’ombre d’un buisson de chênes, now in the collection of Musée des Beaux-Arts de Reims (inv. 899.16.8; see Jean-François Millet, exhib. cat., Lille, October 2017-January 2018, no. 51, p. 86). Figures of shepherdesses, and other women at work in the fields of Barbizon, recur often in Millet's œuvre, both in drawings and in paintings. In his works the artist was able brilliantly to capture the essence of everyday life in rural France.
