Lot Essay

Sarah, Countess of Westmorland, was the daughter of the banker Robert Child (1739-1782), owner of Osterley Park. She eloped with John Fane, 10th Earl of Westmorland on 20 May 1782 to Gretna Green, and as a result was disinherited by her father. The Westmorlands' only daughter, Sarah Sophia (1785-1867), went on to inherit Osterley Park, before marrying George Villiers, 5th Earl of Jersey (1773-1859) on 23 May 1804.
