Lot Essay

This characteristically animated hunt scurry by Ferneley depicts the Belvoir Hunt crossing the Smite, a tributary of the River Devon. Beyond is Belvoir Castle, the ancestral home of the family of the Dukes of Rutland, which overlooks the Vale of Belvoir. Sitting on the borders of Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, the Vale is renowned hunting country, and the Hunt remains to this day one of the most preeminent foxhunts in England. From left, the riders are Charles Leslie, George ‘Squire’ Osbaldeston, Sir Francis Holyoake, William Coke of Norfolk, Lord Robert Manners and the Earl of Wilton.
