Lot Essay

Centered on the lip on both sides is a maenad dancing to the left, looking towards a dancing satyr holding a garland on each arm in added red slip. The Centaur Painter is known for decorating his cups sparsely, with only a few delicately drawn figures, often involved in lively and amusing pursuits. His preferred themes include hunting scenes featuring men wielding sticks, centaurs brandishing stones, and lively dances performed by satyrs and maenads.
