Lot Essay

The Hellenistic gold ring with lentoid cabochon garnet is decorated with two lines of Greek letters separated by a horizontal band, introduced and terminated by a heart-shaped motif to the left and right. They read Θ Α Δ Δ Α and Ο Ν Α Ι Ο - two personal names, each abbreviated to five letters to fit the space available. Thadda could be taken as 'Thaddaeus', in Greek Θαδδαιοϲ. Onaio as Onaios 'Thaddaeus (son) of Onaios'. The owner of the ring.
