Lot Essay

The earrings are adorned with pearl pendants and larger openwork triangular pendants threaded with a long chain, decorated with three small sheet gold discs repoussé stylised frontal heads. For a discussion on this type of jewellery, see M. Schulze, Frühmittelalterliche Kettenohrringe, in Archäologisches Korrespondenzblatt, 14, 1984, pp. 325 ff., pl. 41, and Collection Hélène Stathatos. Les Objets Byzantins et Post-Byzantins, Strasbourg, 1957, pp. 13-14, for a similar necklace (Stathatos Coll. ST 518 a), in the National Museum in Athens.
