An album of illustrated cuttings
An album of cuttings from illuminated manuscripts and printed books [Central Europe, 15th to 19th centuries]
An eclectic collection of cuttings from mostly German manuscripts of the 15th-19th centuries, from biblical and liturgical scenes to cityscapes, coats of arms, leaves from alba amicorum, and an early watercolour of traditional south American dress.
436 x 290mm. 40 leaves with 74 cuttings from illuminated manuscripts and printed books pasted in, the leaves foliated 2-3, 5, 7-8, 13-27, 29-48, the Album labeled 'Album No 6' on inside upper cover, the cuttings numbered N2-N74 (the numbering inconsistent, some cuttings detached, offsetting to album leaves, a few leaves from the album excised, one leaf of the album loose, N44 and 53 blank). 19th-century green morocco binding tooled in gold (scuffed and scratched).
Content: 74 cuttings from at least 35 different manuscripts, mostly of German origin and dating from the 15th to the 18th centuries, including a late 15th-century leaf from a German manuscript depicting a Seraphim, probably from Alain of Lille's text on the symbolical significance of the feathers of the Seraphim, De sex alis Cherubim (no 34); two cuttings from 15th-century Books of Hours: one with a miniature depicting the Mass of St Gregory and borders incorporating the instruments of the Passion, and another with St Michael weighing souls; a 16th-century miniature with the Trinity and German coats of arms (no 11); a late 15th/early 16th-century genealogical tree with Ingolstadt, Munich and Landshut branches of the family (no 41); a frontispiece from a ?17th-century manuscript recounting the deeds of histories of the noble families of Nuremberg, by Simon Schüler (no 38); an allegorical view of the city of Augsburg ('Augusta Vindelicorum'), illuminated by 'Johan Gottfried Bockh' - perhaps the engraver and print-maker Johann Gottfried Bock (1741-1808) (no 39); seven 18th-century cuttings depicting views of the Benedictine Abbey of Melk, the old and new abbey, the presentation of the new abbey, the tomb of Saint Coloman of Stockerau and St Benedict with Benedictines gathering around the abbey (nos 17, 19-23 and 35b); eight 18th-century leaves with scenes from the Old Testament (nos 5, 6, 7, 8, 14, 36, 73 and 74); six leaves from a 17th-century emblem book (nos. 2, 3, 28, 29, 59 and 76); a number of leaves from 17th-century alba amicorum (e.g. nos 55-57); an ?18th-century miniature of Chinese music-makers (no 58); various views of land and cityscapes (nos 65, 66, 68-70); an early 19th-century watercolour of a ?Peruvian woman in traditional costume followed by a girl carrying books, entitled 'La Marchande Comode', perhaps after a book of traditional south American costumes (no number).
