The St John Hornby copy of the second edition of Turrecremata's commentary on the Book of Psalms, the first of two Augsburg editions in two years printed by Johann Schüssler. This edition is dated from a purchaser’s note in the copy at Innsbruck. Turrecremata (also known as Juan de Torquemada), was a prominent Spanish theologian and cardinal, and a committed defender of the office of the pope. Median folio (305 x 197mm). 133 leaves (of 135, without the blanks). Large initials in red and green with penwork flourishes on first two leaves, other initials in red throughout, partly rubricated (very occasional unobtrusive finger-soiling, some minor marginal wormholes with one skilful repair in margin of first leaf). 18th-century quarter pigskin over boards reusing leaves from a manuscript on vellum (spine and upper board somewhat rubbed). Provenance: a few contemporary annotations (some cropped) – Passau, Augustinian Canons of the Lateran Congregation of St. Nicolaus (dissolved 1803; early inscription on first leaf and 18th-century bookplate on front pastedown) – Charles Harry St John Hornby (1867-1946; bookplate and label 'From the Library of C.H.
