Lot Essay
This recording came about as a result of Twickenham technical college student Dave Dilloway's friendship with trainee technicians at the Teddington based ITV company. He described this tape as ...the most representative of 1984... although it was mono, as it was made on sophisticated recording equipment it is good quality for its age. Apart from Step On Me a Brian May/Tim Staffell composition which became the B side to Smile's Earth, the songs are all cover versions. As this recording dates from 1984's late period, May's style is more noticeable. ...All the performances are competent - particularly Tim's vocals and Brian's guitar; although the mix is a little heavy on John [Garnham's] rhythm guitar ...probably [due to] the ear of the recording engineer at the time. All tracks were laid down in one take, ie. no overdubbing at all, so the sound is predominantly simple, as per [1984's] live versions...
