for an unreleased song Mississippi River, the twenty lines of lyrics in blue ink showing deletions and an alteration to the song title, represent the only known example of song lyrics written by Elvis Presley - the song co-written with Terry Fell while Presley was in the army in Germany makes references to his home town and his mother:
...I'll catch the Mystery Train that gets me/there on time/To my old home town and those memories/in my mind...Now I can hear the music of a steel guitar/You can see the beauty of the evenin' star/And my dear old mammy's (sic) glad to see me back,/glad I bought a ticket on a one-way track...
signed and inscribed in Presley's hand at the bottom of the page Words by Elvis Presley and Terry Fell, Music by Terry Fell, 1p.

Lot Essay

These lyrics were acquired by the vendor from Andy Schroler author of Private Elvis who had purchased them from Elvis' landlady Mrs Pieper who rented her house at Goethestrasse 14, Bad Nauheim, Germany to the Presleys in early 1959.

Elvis' mother Glady's Presley had died at the age of 42 on August 14th, 1958, the year before this song was apparently written.
