An autograph letter, signed, [n.d., but early August, 1960], to a fan, telling her We have had a couple of bookings lately - at (1 each a night...I'm on the drums now you know, till we find a good reliable drummer, and we're rehearsing now we've got the time, so we're rocking and enjoying ourselves... adding that he felt guilty about accepting her generous gifts ..I feel lousy about you giving this to me [she had sent him a contribution from her wages as they were always hard up] & even offering to let us have a holiday [she had invited them to join her and some friends in a holiday cottage in North Wales]...You must be kind-hearted or something. Anyway it it's O.K. George (Carl) and I might be able to come.. and telling her if her uncle [Bill Gregson who had a band at the Tower Ballroom, New Brighton where he played a regular spot] coulden't get them any bookings ...it'll make us get around and look for some good bookings ourselves - works both ways...Love Paul and thanks a lot again ! 2pp.

Lot Essay

This letter gives an interesting insight into The Beatles' struggle at the start of their careers. Their dire financial straights causing McCartney to feel guilty about accepting money and an offer of a holiday from a fan. Paul's reference to playing the drums and calling George Harrison (Carl) suggests that this letter was written in the early summer of 1960. Prior to setting out on their first ever tour - a nine day tour of Scotland as backing group to Billy Fury and Johnny Gentle in May 1960, three of the Silver Beatles had adopted stage names ...Paul became Paul Ramon, George became Carl Harrison (after American rockabilly musician Carl Perkins) and Stuart became Stuart de Stael (after the Russian artist Nicholas de Stael)... Tommy Moore who had played the drums with the Silver Beatles on this tour left the group on June 13th, 1960. Another drummer called Tony Chapman played three engagements with the group in June 1960 and Pete Best took up the position on August 12th, 1960.
