Lot Essay

This cartoon illustrates the comment made by John Lennon during an interview with Maureen Cleave that the Beatles were ...more popular than Jesus now.. A comment which taken out of context and misquoted by the American Press caused a furore five months after the initial interview and led Brian Epstein to consider cancelling the group's U.S. Tour in 1966.

Alf Bicknell worked as The Beatles chauffeur in the mid 1960s.
