Lot Essay

The mold-made figural tondo of the lid features a scene in raised relief of an embracing seated couple and Eros. The vessel is ornamented in the typical Canosan fashion of vibrant colors, primarily pink and red, over a white slip. For two other near-identical pyxides with their tondi perhaps cast from the same mold, see the examples in New York, no. 45 in P. Zanker, Afterlives: Ancient Greek Funerary Monuments in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The interior of this pyxis features a trident painted in red pigment.
