Further details
The present group of important Zhang Daqian paintings was formerly in the collection of Mrs. Pauline Tao (Zhang Lüying, 1916-2016), daughter of Zhang Xueliang (1901-2001), and her husband Professor P.F. Tao (Tao Pengfei, 1909-1999). Zhang Xueliang, a pivotal figure in modern Chinese history, was a passionate collector of painting and calligraphy and became a close friend of Zhang Daqian in the early 1930s. Through her father’s connection, Pauline came to know the artist from a young age. After settling in the San Francisco Bay Area, she and her husband maintained close friendship with Zhang Daqian, often travelling and dining together. During the 1960s and 1970s, they received numerous significant works directly from the artist. This group of paintings remained with couple until they were entrusted to the present owner, a long-time family friend, who has cherished and preserved the collection with great care.

This collection comprises ten magnificent works by Zhang Daqian, spanning a diverse range of subjects and displaying exceptional artistry. Among them, Bamboo and Orchids (Lot 151) bears dedication to Prof. and Mrs. Tao. The Scenery of Hua Mountain (Lot 160) masterfully combines splashed ink and detailed brushwork, depicting a traditional subject in an entirely new style with captivating charm. The set of eight paintings of flowers, vegetables, and landscapes (Lots 152-159), all similar in size and executed on Japanese silk-mounted cardboards, were likely originally conceived as an album. Each piece, whether created through splashing or outlining, is exquisitely rendered. All were published in the 1967 book Recent Works by Zhang Daqian, featuring a title inscription by Ye Gongchao (1904-1981) and published by Taipei’s Weixin Book Store, making them exceptionally rare. Several of these works were later selected for major exhibitions of the artist, including the 1988 exhibition at the Taipei National Museum of History and the 1991 show at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery in Washington, D.C. As such, they represent museum-caliber masterpieces seldom seen on the market.
