Lot Essay

Launched in 1938, the Patek Philippe reference 591 is one of the more obscure, unfamiliar, yet beautiful chronograph wristwatches from the storied Maison. Manufactured for only nine years, it is believed that approximately 100 examples of these 'wartime' chronographs were made: 60 in pink gold and 40 in yellow gold, such as the present lot.

Reference 591 was created by Patek Philippe as a larger-sized alternative to the more common references 130 and 533. Nicknamed the 'Fagiolino' or 'small green bean' in Italian, the lugs mimic the shape of the chronograph pushers and are both beautiful and elegant in profile, allowing the watch to appear larger than its 34 mm case size. The cases were made by Wenger (Geneva Key 1) and feature snap-on casebacks.
