Lot Essay

To the best of our knowledge, less than 5 white gold reference 5039G-013 with this ravishing deep blue soleil dial are known publicly. The combination of the sleekly elegant white gold case with ‘Clous de Paris’ bezel and elongated lugs, the white gold hour indexes and hands, and the rich blue of the dial is truly breathtaking. Made long after reference 5039 was discontinued in 2007, the present was almost certainly made upon special request as ‘out of series’ pieces. The present watch offers something very special for the collector, not only for the colour of the dial but also for the dial’s completely up-to-date Patek Philippe styling that is quite unlike the dials of the discontinued earlier standard production reference. It can be considered as a true revival of a past classic with a contemporary aesthetic, whilst absolutely unmistakable as a reference 5039, the Patek Philippe signature is the modern large size, and the date numerals surrounding the moon phase are gently graduated in size to allow for the variations in available dial space. Its highly individual striking apperance and extreme rarity places the present watch as one of the most desirable of Patek Philippe’s modern perpetual calendars. Furthermore, it is preserved in excellent condition and is accompanied by the Certificate of Origin.

The standard production 5039 – automatic perpetual calendar, was introduced in 1997 and discontinued in 2007. It was made in 500 examples in yellow gold, 300 in pink gold, and 400 in white gold. The present watch and the other known example were sold in 2023. Such ‘out of series’ watches were usually made on the specific instructions of Patek Philippe’s President, Mr. Stern, for very special clients, as such they very rarely reach the open market. The Certificate of Origin confirms the legitimacy of the blue dial - an extreme rarity and prize catch for the Patek Philippe collector.
