Lot Essay

Derain returned to sculpture in 1938 after witnessing a tree uprooted by lighting, which gave him the desire to work three-dimensionally. He continued his sculptural practice until 1950. Posthumous editions of his works were cast through the late 1950s to early 1960s under the supervision of Alberto Giacometti.
