Lot Essay
This painting may once have formed part of a set of the Four Seasons. A depiction of Summer of nearly identical dimensions and likewise dated by Klaus Ertz to the second decade of the seventeenth century may belong to the same series (op. cit., no. 751). That painting last sold Sotheby's, London, 10 April 2013, lot 14 for £96,100. While Ertz attributed the figures in both instances to Jan Brueghel the Elder, they more closely resemble those of his son, Jan Brueghel the Younger. If this is correct, the panels are likely to date slightly later than 1610-20 as proposed by Ertz.
A copy of this painting with slight differences, most notably to the foliage in the left middle ground, was formerly with Galerie Waterman in Amsterdam in 1985 (see K. Ertz, Josse de Momper der Jüngere (1564-1635): Die Gemälde mit kritischem Œuvrekatalog, Freren, 1986, no. A 172). Ertz subsequently conflated the two paintings and their provenances (op. cit., 2008-2010).
