Samuel Davis trained as a professional artist in London, where he befriended Thomas Daniell, before travelling to India in 1780 to join the East India Company (he was made a director in 1806). He arrived in Calcutta in around 1782, and stylistically this drawing appears to date from around that time.

Belvedere House was given to Warren Hastings, the first Governor-General of Bengal, by Mir Jafar Ali Khan, Nawab of Bengal, before 1763, when Hastings made a request to the Supreme Council asking for "permission of the Board to build a bridge over Collighut (Kalighat) Nulla on the road to his garden house."

In February 1780, Hastings sold Belvedere House to Major William Tolly, who lived there until his death in 1784.
It was later the home of the Prinsep family, whose members included the artist William Prinsep, and by 1858, was the seat of the Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal.

In 1948, it became the home of the National Library of India, which it remains today.

We are grateful to Charles Greig for proposing the attribution after first-hand inspection of the work.
