Lot Essay

This watercolour depicts a young girl, probably one of the artist's children, in the grounds of Château d'Honvault, located between Wimereux and Boulogne, to which the family moved in 1882. The surrounding gardens and countryside offered Smythe ample inspiration - the present lot is typical of his rural watercolours, which led to his being associated with the Idyllists toward the end of the 19th century.
