Rare Italian edition of the Theatrum, published after Ortelius' death. First issued by J.B. Vrients in 1608, the present lot is in fact a re-issue of that first edition with a new title-page. Van der Krogt IIIA, 31:652.

2 parts in one volume, folio (472 x 320mm). Engraved title with portrait of Pope Clement VIII to verso, full-page engraved illustration of Ortelius' epitaph incorporating small portrait on verso of A5, full-page engraved portrait of Ortelius to verso of D6, 5 engraved text-illustrations [the world system, Northern Hemisphere (‘Hemisphaerium Claudij Ptolemi’), The Old World (‘Hemisphaerium Arzahelis Frisij’), map of Europe and map of Italy], 128 double-page engraved maps, engraved title to part 2 (Parergon), 33 double-page engraved maps and 5 double-page plates, all coloured by a contemporary hand, with the Nomenclatur Ptolemaicus (Antwerp, 1607) bound at end (map 48 ‘L’Hannonia’ with large 240mm tear without loss, plate ‘Tempe Di Thessalia’ in Parergon with very large tear almost severing the plate in half, about 6 other maps with marginal tears some extending into printed area, map 78 ‘L’Italia’ with old crude tape repair at gutter, some extensive browning occasionally heavy, occasional creasing to maps, faint marginal dampstaining at foot to leaves at beginning and end). Contemporary vellum, panelled in gilt (rubbed and soiled, lacking silk ties).
