EDWARDS, George (1694-1773)
A Natural History of Uncommon Birds and of some other Rare and Undescribed Animals. London: for the Author, 1743 [but c.1752]-1803. [With:] – Gleanings of Natural History ... Glanures d'histoire naturelle. London: for the Author, 1760-1806.
Fine copy of this important English zoological work, with text in English and French containing detailed descriptions, mostly of birds, many of which had not previously been illustrated: 'One of the most important of all Bird Books, both as a Fine Bird Book and a work of Ornithology’ (Fine Bird Books).

The Gleanings was issued as a sequel to the main work. The bibliography of the work is extremely complicated: ‘In common with many other publications of the same period many copies of this work were made up from assorted stock, giving rise to considerable difficulty in the identification and collation of ideal copies of the various editions and issues’ (Lisney). Because of the uncertainty of the collation, this lot is sold not subject to return. Anker 124, 126; Nissen IVB 286, 288; Fine Bird Books (1990) p.73; Lisney, 189, 192, 194, 197, 198, 200, 201, 203, 205, 208, 210 and 211; Zimmer pp.192-94 and 198-99.

7 parts bound in 3 volumes, quarto (290 x 230mm). Text in English and French. 362 etched plates coloured by a contemporary hand, uncoloured portrait of a Samojeed in volume 2; 2 engraved frontispieces, portrait to Gleanings, additional portrait mounted before frontispiece to Uncommon Birds and medallions on title-pages coloured by a different – possibly later – hand to that of the main body of plates (some occasional scattered offsetting and spotting, heaviest to title and last few leaves of vol. I). Contemporary red straight-grained morocco gilt, possibly by Staggemeier, covers with outer border of two thin filets sandwiching a thick rule with an inner roll of a palmette within a wavy vine, spine with raised bands in 6 compartments, lettered in second and numbered in third, gilt turn-ins and edges (spines fractionally sunned, extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Richard Henry Alexander Bennet (1743-1814, MP for Newport 1770-1774; engraved bookplate; Leigh and Sotheby sold his duplicates 8-14 March 1810, but the present title was not among them).
