Niels Bohr’s copy of Einstein’s greatest contribution to physics: first separate edition, following its appearance in the journal Annalen der Physik. A gift to Bohr on his 60th birthday from the Danish physician Erik Warburg, this offprint edition incorporates textual revisions, the addition of a table of contents on pp.3-5 and Einstein's introduction on pp.5-6. Warburg was chief physician at the medical department, Rigshospitalet, in Copenhagen, and in 1943 he was the author of the first Danish textbook on heart and circulatory diseases. In 1944, during the Nazi occupation of Denmark, he escaped unharmed from an assassination attempt and in 1963 became the first recipient of the Novo Nordisk Prize for exceptional contribution to medicine.
The present copy is the first issue, with the printer's imprint 'Druck von Metzger & Wittig in Leipzig' on the verso of the title and in a shortened form on the lower wrapper, which lists 7 items published by Barth and dated 1909 to 1916, ending with T. Ziehen's Die Psychologie großer Heerführer (1916). Weil 80a; PMM 408; Norman 696: ‘The theory's impact upon twentieth-century science and thought can hardly be overstated’ (Norman 695).
Octavo (240 x 158mm). 20th-century half calf over marbled boards (extremities faintly rubbed), preserving original printed wrappers (mildly toned, faint crease to one corner). Provenance: Niels Bohr (1885-1962; inscription on front endpaper dated 7th October 1945: ‘med de hjerteligste Lykønskninger fra min Familie og / Deres hengivne / Erik Warburg’ [with heartfelt congratulations from my family and / Yours affectionately / Erik Warburg]).
