Lot Essay

The obverse of this krater depicts a symposium scene with four partially draped youths reclining on a long kline. Each supports his weight on his bent left arm on patterned cushions, and holds a sash in his raised right hand. In front of them, a nude woman wearing a crown is playing the aulos. Under the kline are two tables laden with food. The reverse features three draped youths.

For a related bell-krater in The Netherlands, also depicting four symposiasts and a female playing the double flue, see pl. 148 in M.F. Jongkees-Vos, ed., Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum, Leiden, Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, vol. 3.
