Lot Essay

In 1888 the renowned British archaeologist Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie discovered 399 shabtis for Horwedja, a priest of the goddess Neith during the 30th Dynasty, placed in two niches flanking the sarcophagus. Each was inscribed with Chapter 6 from the Book of the Dead. Today, the largest collection of these shabtis is held by The Manchester Museum. For the type, see H.D. Schneider, Shabtis, pt. II, p. 191, no. 5.3.1.188 and G. Janes, Shabtis: A Private View, pp. 195-197, no. 99.
