Lot Essay

Privately printed in a limited edition of just 500 copies, the present example was one of four signed copies awarded as a prize by the Australian pop music magazine Go-Set in November 1970. In announcing the winners of the competition, the magazine predicted that ‘the four personally autographed books of Jim Morrison's poetry will one day become priceless rock relics, something to be treasured’.

An American Prayer captures Morrison at his most poetically raw and cerebral. The book’s significance deepened after Morrison’s death, when his recorded poetry sessions—some of which were made on his birthday in December 1970—became the foundation for the posthumous 1978 album of the same name, with music added by the surviving members of The Doors.
