Lot Essay

These two paintings were created on 6 February 1939, during one of Zhang Shanzi’s trips to Paris. Depicting his most celebrated subjects, the tiger and the lotus, and presented as gifts to a friend, the works not only mark the pinnacle of his artistic career but also embody profound patriotic sentiment and serve a diplomatic purpose.
