Lot Essay

The Reference 5059
Introduced in 1998 the reference 5059 was inspired by watches made popular from the Great War era. Featuring a heavy and interesting office case, the exterior caseback is solid gold in which it can flip out to reveal a second sapphire back that covers the movement. Furthermore, the watch has an onion-style crown and protruding screwed spring bars.

A historical nod to the past can also be seen in the dial design, displaying a classic white dial with roman numerals and feuille hands. This impressive perpetual calendar wristwatch has a retrograde date complication in which the hand progresses along a 240° arc located within the hour scale between 8 and 4 o'clock. Around midnight on the last day of each month, be it the 28th, 29th, 30th, or 31st, the hand automatically jumps back to the 1st. The reference 5059 was discontinued in 2006 and replaced by reference 5159.
