The Horological Machine No. 6 ‘Space Pirate’
MB&F’s sixth Horological Machine, the HM6 ‘Space Pirate’, is an extraordinary timepiece with one-minute flying tourbillon that is “designed to operate in the hostile environment of space – the space on your wrist." Offered in 5 versions differentiated by case material, this remarkable timepiece was originally inspired by, in the words of MB&F "a Japanese anime TV series from the 1970s and 80s: Capitaine Flam (Captain Future in English). In the show, Capitaine Flam’s spaceship was called the 'Comet' and consisted of two spheres joined by a connecting tube. Put two such craft together and the seeds of 'Space Pirate' were planted."
The offered lot, the 'Sapphire Vision' model, has gentle sweeping curves made of sapphire crystal and platinum in which 10 semi-spherical crystals encapsulating free-moving parts of the movement and time indications. The four corners of the biomorphic case are formed as 360° spheres capped on both the top and bottom by transparent sapphire crystal domes. The two front spheres display the hours and minutes rotating vertically, at the back, twin turbines spin horizontally which regulate the automatic winding system. The 68-jewel movement was developed exclusively for the HM6 by MB&F in collaboration with David Candaux Horlogerie Créative and has a 72-hour power reserve. The most fascinating aspect, however, is the finely crafted flying tourbillon within the central sapphire crystal dome. A retractable domed shield composed of four overlapping curved blades that is activated by the crown covers the tourbillon, designed to protect the tourbillon for UV radiation, when it opens and closes the effect is of a blinking eye.
