Lot Essay

At the age of twelve, Olaf Carl Seltzer entered the Danish Art School and Polytechnic Institute and, upon his father’s death, his mother moved the family to Great Falls, Montana. In Great Falls, Seltzer met fellow artist Charles Russell, whose work influenced him greatly. As a prolific artist, he completed over 2,500 works depicting Western scenes including cowboys, Native Americans, wildlife and landscapes. Originally owned by Brown & Bigelow, the present work was possibly reproduced on one of the company's calendars.
