Lot Essay

Painted in 1805, at the height of Henry Raeburn’s career, this portrait of the advocate William Fullarton of Skeldon, Aryshire is a notable example of his work. When included in David Mackie’s 1993 dissertation, the sitter’s dates were not known (loc. cit.). Much is documented regarding the life of one Colonel William Fullarton of Fullarton (1754-1808) who was a politician, military commander in India, and later commissioner of Trinidad, and was engaged in agricultural reform in Aryshire, publishing two memoirs on the topic. As the sitter appears to be a young gentleman in his thirties, however, it is likely the portrait depicts William Fullarton of Skeldon (1775-1835), an advocate and Provost of Aryshire who held office from 1827 to 1829 and from 1832 to 1834.
