Acquired by Annie Laurie Crawford, later Aitken (1900-1984) from the above on 15 December 1947 for the Main Hall at Tamerlane, Greenwich, Connecticut.

Lot Essay

The mirror relates in its broad design and carving to the various mirrors 'richly carvd and gilded with borders of looking glass' supplied by the Scottish maker William Mathie for the dining room and bed chambers at Dumfries House in 1759 (see 'Edinburgh Wrights and Furniture Makers 1660-1840', Furniture History, 1983, notably pl. 14-15).
