Lot Essay

François Le Vavasseur is recorded at Vincennes-Sèvres as a painter specializing in flowers 1753-1770 and again 1772-1776.
The painter’s mark of three dots and a ‘tail’ may represent the heraldic symbol for wood or the sign for ermine. It is found on pieces painted with flowers at Vincennes and later Sèvres marked with date letters circa 1753-1760. This timing corresponds to the working dates of the flower painters Jean-Jacques Sioux and Michel-Josse Le Riche fils, but other marks have been attributed to these artists.
