Lot Essay

This Chantilly model, based on blanc de chine figures of Buddha of earlier date, does not come up often for sale, and most known examples are in museum collections and have enameling. A pair is therefore a true rarity, and one of the few known enameled pairs is in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, obj. no. 85.DI.380. Other single polychrome-decorated examples of this model include the example in the Mrs. Charles Dunlap collection, exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Masterpieces of European Porcelain, 1949, cat. no. 113; the example in the Jack and Belle Linsky Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, object no. 1982.60.270a, b; the example at Sèvres, Manufacture et musée nationaux, inventory no. MNC18713 and another in the Musée de Cluny, illustrated by W.B. Honey, French Porcelain of the 18th Century, p. 15 and pl. 28b. A further related single example, previously in the collection of Alfred Wenz, was sold from a private European Collection; Christie's, Paris, 18 November 2025, lot 3 (€57,150).
