Girardet's drawing is based on one of Vernet's last painting commissions from King Louis-Philippe before he was dethroned. Vernet's painting was executed in 1846 and depicts the Bourbon monarch on horseback with his sons. The image was meant to reinforce the legitimacy Louis-Philippe and his sons' claims to the throne.
