Lot Essay

The model of Thrush was commissioned by Queen Maria Josepha, Electress of Saxony and Queen of Poland (1699-1757). Kändler’s work report for April 1745 records: Einen Vogel Corrigiret im Modell nahmentl. ein Wiesen Ziemer ebenfalls Vor Ihro Majt. die Königin [one bird model was corrected, as was a Thrush, for her Majesty the Queen](1). See Sarah-Katharina Andres-Acevedo, Die Autonomen Figürlichen Plastiken Johann Joachim Kaendlers und seiner Werkstatt, Stuttgart, 2023, Vol. 2, p. 200, no. 571, where the model is attributed to both J.J. Kändler and P. Reinicke. For similar models see Carl Albiker, Die Meissner Porzellantiere im 18. Nr. 38, and the pair from the Irwin Untermyer Collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, object no. 64.101.11.
