Lot Essay

This vibrant group of watercolors by Nicolino Vicompte Calyo (1790–1884) exemplifies the Italian-born artist’s remarkable talent and distinctive style, shaped by his academic training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the Neapolitan tradition of topographical and landscape painting. Calyo arrived in America in the mid-1830s, settling first in Baltimore and soon after in New York City, where he quickly gained recognition for his brilliantly colored and meticulously detailed urban views. Several of his celebrated New York scenes are represented in the present group.

The works are bound in an album dedicated in French to Alexandre Cor, who is recorded in New York in 1836. An article published in the October 2, 1841 edition of The Southern Patriot, notes a "Mr. Alexandre Cor, the Consul General's Secretary". Another article published in the January 13, 1846 edition of the Courrier des Etats-Unis (Courier of the United States) on news from New York City, notes a "Mr. Alexandre Cor, former Chancellor of the French Consulate…” Cor was employed at the French Consulate in New York during the 1840s, when he presumably commissioned Calyo. The album comprises twelve watercolor paintings, each inscribed in French, including:

1.Vue de New York, prise de Hoboken (View of New York, taken from Hoboken)
2. Vur de New York, prise de Williamsburgh (View of New York, taken from Williamsburg)
3. Vue de New York ou de Bedloe's Island (View of New York from Bedloe's Island)
