Lot Essay

The present work depicts an idyllic coastal garden, likely in Kennebunkport, Maine. According to William H. Gerdts, the present work is "an exceptionally nice example...Graves' garden pictures are certainly always his most attractive...he seems to have specialized, in Kennebunkport, Maine, in two themes—rather picturesque local genre subjects, and garden pictures." (unpublished letter, 1985)
