Lot Essay

Born in Boston, Jean Paul Selinger studied at the Lowell Institute before traveling abroad to Stuttgart and Munich. A member of the Boston Art Club and exhibitor at the National Academy, Selinger also had studios in Providence, Rhode Island, and at Glen House in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in the 1880s. His wife, Emily Harris McGary, was also a painter known for her floral still lifes. The present work may depict the Great Comet of 1882.
