Lot Essay

The present work may depict a view of Wappingers Creek, which runs from Thompson Pond to the Hudson River, with the Taconic Range in the distance, near the artist's family's home in the lower Hudson Valley. The placid, winding water and mountains shrouded in atmospheric haze beneath the sprawling sky emphasize the vastness and variety that the American terrain offered Hudson River School painters like Suydam.
