Lot Essay

When this painting last appeared at auction in 2001, Ursula Härting suggested, on the basis of a transparency, that a studio hand may also have contributed to the medallion. However, Fred G. Meijer has more recently noted the high quality of the painted medallion is recognizable as Frans Francken II's hand (written communication December 2025). While many painted garlands of this type have been attributed to Andries Daniels, as one such collaboration is signed, Meijer has noted the flowers could have been executed by any number of yet-to-be identified painters working within Francken's workshop (op. cit.).
