Lot Essay

The broad hoop is round in section, expanding towards the oval bezel. The stone has beveled sides and is engraved with a flying draped pantheistic goddess facing left, her toes pointed downwards. She combines attributes of both Victoria (wings) and Minerva (crested helmet, small circular shield and spear). In her projecting hand she holds a bird, either an eagle or owl; a snake projects forward from the hem of her billowing garment.

For other pantheistic goddesses see nos. 2.30-2.34 in M. Henig and A. MacGregor, Catalogue of the Engraved Gems and Finger-rings in the Ashmolean Museum, vol. II, Roman.
