Lot Essay
Apollo stands on a rectangular base with his weight on the right leg. He wears a long chiton secured by a broad belt, a mantle fastened at the shoulders that falls down the back in deep V-shaped folds, and sandals. These garments, together with the single preserved strand of hair at his right shoulder, identify the figure as of the Apollo Kitharoidos type. In this variation, the god would originally have held a kithara (a lyre-like instrument) at his left side. For a similar example in Wörlitz, see Arachne Online Database no. 1091107.
