Lot Essay

Vases attributed to the Luxus Group are characterized by large figures and abundant ornamentation that cover the entire surface, rather than being arranged in separate registers. This large alabastron features a bearded male siren facing right with outstretched wings with rosettes of varying sizes adorning the field. For another alabastron attributed to the Luxus Group, see the one in the British Museum with a winged figure, perhaps a wind god, and sphinx, inv. no. 1860,0404.11 (pl. 42:1a-b in D.A. Amyx, op. cit).
