Lot Essay

The domed shoulders of this askos feature a sprawled satyr on one side and a leaping wild boar on the other. For a closely related example, but with a satyr paired with a sniffing hound, see the example in the Antikenmuseum und Sammlung Ludwig, Basel (inv. no BS1921.377), no. 54 in E. Simon, “Silenoi,” LIMC, vol. VIII.
