Lot Essay

In the form of a filled pigskin resting on its hind legs, this balsamarium features a short upturned tail with the neck bound in spiral cord, imitating a wineskin. For a nearly identical example, see the one formerly in the Bastis Collection (D. von Bothmer, et al., op. cit.); also compare one in Athens from the Sanctuary of Zeus Lykaios at Mount Lykaion (National Archaeological Museum, inv. no. 13218).
