Lot Essay

This seal is engraved with a goddess, possibly Ashtart or Anat, standing between two seated figures, both in a long dress and holding a vase. The goddess is depicted nude, lifting a schematic veil to reveal herself. Three figures in short kilts approach from the right, all standing with their arms behind their backs.

For the subject, excluding the seated figures, see the hematite cylinder seal in New Haven, no. 1242 in B. Buchanan, Early Near Eastern Seals in The Yale Babylonian Collection.
