Lot Essay

Among the studies on this sheet is Hercules borne to Olympus in a chariot in the upper portion of the drawing. The figure recalls the central motif in a now lost painting by Giovanni Domenico known through a print. The painting of the Triumph of Hercules was one of a series of four commissioned to Domenico by the court in Saint Petersburg.
