Lot Essay

The drawing reproduces a print of 1610 by Hendrick Hondius I (fig. 1; N.M. Orenstein, The New Hollstein. Hendrick Hondius, Roosendaal, 1994, no. 54, ill.). The view is an imaginary representation of the biblical village of Emmaus, depicted as a castle entirely surrounded by water. The castle is connected to the shore by a long bridge with a gate. Christ and two disciples are walking on the bridge.
