Lot Essay

Works by the Swiss artist Johann Rudolf Feyerabend, known as Le Long, are often misattributed to the Frenchman Paul Lelong (1799-1846). Feyerabend worked mainly in Switzerland, but for a brief period - at the end of the 18th Century - he moved to France near Caen. It was in France that the local people gave him the nickname of ‘Le Long’ because he was very tall and thin and because his surname was difficult to pronounce. (B. A. de Fleury, ‘Le Long. Peintre de Gouaches’, Journal des Arts, XLII, no. 41 (29 May 1920), p. 1).

Feyerabend specialized in small gouaches with still lifes for depicting a variety of objects displayed on a simple stone parapet. Often the compositions include roses, a kind of signature for the artist.
